if you have all the elements as different layers you can just animate the mask position for each. sometimes using the smart mask interpolation(i think that's what it's called) will help keep the masks shape uniform.
there are a number of ways to do it. i also remember there being a tutorial using the echo effect as well. mograph.net has a tutorial section, i think you'd be able to find some stuff there.
