It sucks. We have the same thing here in Canada called the CRTC. It regulates our media in Canada and guarantees a certain amount of Canadian content, quality and standards in programming. But over the last 10 years they have been slowly losing control and influence to corporate interest. We have mainly 3 station here CTV, Global, and CBC, if you exclude Much Music and city TV. They basically now have all American content, 90% of it is crap, except for the CBC on a good day. In an ideal world yes communication should benefit the mass, but at the end of the day corporate interest takes over and the benefit is lost. It is a fine line. You have to ask yourself what really is the FCC doing. Given the amount of degrading portrayal of women, all humans for that matter, on reality shows, in music videos, etc. Both the CRTC and the FCC have to compete with the Bill of Rights, our equivalent, The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. At the end of the day it comes down to the same old argument. In one camp the people who believe that freedom of speech is a right and the other camp that believe that it is a privilege. Where do you stand?
