CanCon sounds like hand-holding protectionism, but it's not. It's an added element of natural selection: the crap still sinks to the bottom, and there's more room for the stuff that's good enough to get a following.
Frankly, I'd rather listen to crappy Canadian music than the overwhelming majority of popular Yank music.
And our film industry could use something like this in the theatres. South Korea has/had a 60% rule (the US has been fighting them and recently the Koreans buckled) and it produced an explosion of great Korean cinema, like Old Boy, 3 Iron, the Mr/Mrs Vengeance films, and on and on.
