First let me say that I didn't read the whole thing.
To summarize (editorialize):
Design is incapable of "making a positive impact" or "touching people's lives". That's what doctors and exotic dancers do.
Designers speaking about being remembered for some kind of lasting contribution is about as hypocritical and useless as professional althletes lecturing about morality.
There are two kinds of designers. Retards and assholes. Retards are usually women, AIGA, sagmeister, and everyone in that thread.
Any career path where you wake up everyday thinking. "shit, I can't make a living doing this when i'm 50 huh?" isn't worth pursuing and doesn't contribute anything of value to society.
