Depending on the machine I'm working on at the time... I use both of the above.
I've got family, friends and coworkers/clients that all work on different Messenger set-ups... so I jam them all into one.
Trillian is rather flawless (go pro for $30)... you can even webcam w/a pedafile who thinks your a twelve-year-old girl - no matter what messenger he/she chooses to broadcast their genitals on...
... and vice-versa of course.
