Ok, here is a comic I made just for you...

Seriously, I believe that when someone says they need "space" or "time" that they are not ready for the relationship with you either at that time - or ever. At that time you are not as important to them as they are to you and they are willing to risk losing you to spend time alone (or date other people). If someone is willing to risk losing you, then they aren't as into you as they should be and you shouldn't waste your time waiting on them.
My advice to you (a woman's advice) if a woman you are dating says this to you - just accept it, and then focus on you. Do the things that make you happy, get out and have fun with your friends, meet new people, and then maybe during that "space" she needed you might eventually meet someone else who doesn't need space, or maybe she will realize after that time to herself that she misses you and doesn't need that space after all.
Only time will tell, but in the meantime just focus on you.
That's my 2 cents! :o)
