you go into power saving setting and set the display to sleep after say 10 mins and the HD to sleep: never
this way there is no screen but the computer is still on, so you will have to put up with the fans, but yes unless you are able to teach your mac to sleep walk then obviously it cant do stuff while it sleeps, this is the purpose of sleep innit?
