I read your last post too and I think you have really hit the nail on the head with the differences btw americans and brits. "We" take everything personally and "we" don't have that self-deprecating sense of humor. It seems the Brits can say things that sound like a complete insult and noone takes offense. You can't really talk like that here. But also, take it as a compliment that this person was probably a bit insecure around you b/c they think you're really cool, beautiful and talented and that just added to him being defensive.
