You're pretty much screwed. You're going into debt for a LONG time. Even if it was the other guy's fault, it's standard procedure (at least in the EU) to sue whoever's driving without proper insurance.
If you didn't know it lapsed, then good luck my friend - but if you were aware - burn.
I was in an accident 4 and a half years ago and got hit by somebody without insurance. As far as I know, he's still paying.
