What is oral allergy syndrome?
A food allergy such as oral allergy syndrome occurs when the immune system mistakenly believes that a harmless substance like a pear or an apple is harmful. In its attempt to protect itself, the body makes antibodies to the food and the next time the food is eaten, the body goes into overdrive, releasing chemicals and histamine, which lead to a variety of symptoms such as red, itchy rashes and swelling. Swelling and itching of the lips and the mouth in response to eating an allergenic food is known as oral allergy syndrome.
