Can anyone offer a range that I should be expecting to pay for a studio in say Manhattan, for example.

(Mar 13 06, 16:16)A lot depends on which part of Manhattan. For a 1 bedroom, in places like the East Village, Lower East Side, etc., expect to pay between $1500 and $2500 a month. The prices go up in places like Chelsea and most parts of Midtown Manhattan. Honestly, there is a tremendous range of places and prices, so the thing to do is start with a budget, and then look at a few places within that range and decide which one is the best deal.
