like anything in life, marriage is what you make it.
it can be a wonderful thing, or it can be crap....in my case, my wife and i have been married for almost 7 years, and together for about 13 or 14 now...and its awesome...one daughter and a boy on the way :)
in the recent past, i think the me-generations of the 70's and 80's kinda blew themselves apart....something about them was just too self centred...
obviously not all of em, but enough to make a difference...other things have been a factor too...the church is less of a force these days than in the past...women have more choices in the matter (if the marriage does indeed suck, they can split easier)
anyhow, there's lots of reasons why marriage has changed, and why more people breakup...but it doesn't change the fact that it is an excellent thing when done right, and i whole heartedly endorse it :)
