Speaking of german POW camps...my stepmother has a brother-in-law that was actually in a POW camp in michigan. He's never seen Hogan's Heroes in his entire life, but the stuff he's told me (i see him occasionally at family functions) sounds EXACTLY like that. They made radios and hid them in canteens, had their own black market and clandestine mail service etc. He says running away was never an option because the place was in the middle of nowhere and they weren't treated that badly.
He's got alzheimer these days tho and has stopped recognizing his wife of over 40 years. He keeps demanding of her to take him home. It's pretty sad.
