    I always seem to sing flat, I have a very deep voice...maybe I need to stand on some hot coals while singing...

    The biggest mistake people make in singing is LISTENING TO THEMSELVES. You should be listening to the accompaniment. As soon as you start to listen to yourself, you go flat. I promise you.
    Try to sing along to records, but listen to the record, not yourself. You will improve.
    It's nice to put my normally moot music degree to use! :)
