pomoo, both DIN are versions of Deutsche Industrie Norme 1451 from the year 1932, so I wouldn't call any a copy of the other. The 17 SB version is just nicely stencil-ruler rounded which I like a lot. And it comes cheap too.
The Dax family is beautiful and (alongside the DIN) one of my top 10 fonts (I set my own CV in Dax), but I wouldn't say it's very similar to DIN. They seem to serve similar purposes well and I think that's what you meant. But I don't think having Daxline and DIN 17 would be any redundant.
Btw. DIN roots reach deeper than the 30's, there's a great 5 part article by Albert-Jan Pool, the author of FF DIN.
