heres the deal with LA:
there is no design scene, really, because, just like anywhere else, design does not really stand alone. if you want a design scene, go to art school. much of the design action that goes on is related to music, art, graffiti, entertainment, furniture, food, nature...there is an amazing "design scene" if you aren't looking for design.
as far as creative options, there are tons of things going on, you just have to dig a little, meet people and find out whats up. it really is a microcosm of the world at large. it seems like every person and street in Los Angeles is its own "design scene", you just gotta abre los ojos.
as far as jobs, there is plenty of work. craigslist is not a clear indication. you have to get out there and get involved, and meet people. a lot of money flows through Los Angeles, and you can get it if you get out there and hustle. i have been freelancing since 2000, and i got no complaints.
one more thing i must add is that LA is super-diverse. all of the stereotypical hollywood types are usually people who just moved here from missouri hoping to be the next julia roberts and end up working at starbucks. LA natives either dont care about the entertainment industry or have a nice job behind the scenes painting sets or running errands for a production. or designing shit for them people, like i do...
i love LA. best place to live.
