I've had quite a few friends and co-workers move to Minny for design work/jobs. All of them have returned in less than 2 years. There are plenty of great firms in Milw and Madison both. I think you'll find Milwaukee has a lot more to offer than it seems.
I personally enjoy it because I get to work with the NBA, MLB, NFL, the Packers specifically, and some great places like Harley Davidson, Milwaukee art Museum, etc. Can't ask for more than that. A real great mix here in the city. While there is a lot of print work the online world is booming and growing quickly as Milw catches up in some respects to Chicago.
And of course that's a nice perk too, 90 miles south and you have a great get away and an even bigger pool to go fishing for clients.
