Im from south orange county. It was a nice place to grow up.... but in a year or two when I buy my house, I would rather go the route of south pasadena or some place with a little more character, rather than buy a house in a cookie cutter community like mission viejo, dana point or something. Plus i think most OC kids are living in a bubble, seriously.
LA county is way better for me. You still have beutiful houses, Safe communities, Great school (depending on where you are) and cool people (depending on where you are.
Theres a lot of $ in SO.OC but if you have $ you can rock LA well.
There is a huuuge drug problem with kids in OC and you'd never know it either. Pretty scary. There's lots of coke and speed in south OC.
