if you're convinced at some point it's totally frapped and you're going to toss the drive. do this first. i bought a $70 "for parts" ipod off ebay and it powered up but gave me the folder icon as well. i opened it up and unplugged the drive, then carefully opened the drive housing and saw that the hd arm was stuck. i popped it back, put it all back together and it's has been working like a charm since. good luck.
