Islam was developed in the midst of a tribal conflict amongst bedouins, one the tribes being that of the Quresh. They fought for the control of Mecca - a major trading city. When mohammed tried to unite the bedouin tribes he was expelled to Medina. Medina was a city founded by Jews with a large Jewsih contingent who inspired Mohammeds theology. It was his experiences in Medina with the Christians and Jews that led him to announce that they were people of the book and should be treated with respect. He then returned to Mecca to reattempt to try and unite the warring bedouin tribes, this time under the banner of Islam.
Once the bedouin's were united, and their position in Mecca was consolidated conversion was never the objective of subsequent Muslim dynasties.
They existeed as a minority in the middle east for hundreds of years, as they did else where (India, the whole of Buddhist central Asia etc..)
Do you honestly think I can't list pages of crimes committed by early medieval Christian groups in the name of Christianity?
