The self harm kid came back in this morning, I asked him why he wasn't in school but he just shrugged his shoulders. He reached into his bag saying that he had something to show me, it was a notebook, inside were pages and pages of sketches and doodles, drawings of knives and razor wire, wilting flowers and extracted teeth, very well drawn for a kid of 11. I said this was a talent he should nurture but he said "this isn't a talent, this is more like a curse, momma says I draw what satan tells me to draw" and he flicked to the back of the book and showed me a red ink painting of an angel holding a chainsaw and explained that he painted it with his own blood. I said that what his mother had told him was nonsense and that he should stop cutting himself, he just looked at me and said "you're not my pops yoou know, and besides, how can I believe in satan if I don't believe in God"
It's been a while since I have been that speechless.
