Staten Island's not that bad. Yes the further you get from the north shore the more you feel like you're in jersey. If you stick to St. George you'll be fine. I used to like to get outta the city after work, and was able to be more creative outside of the sensory overload. I'm a quiet person though so if you like to party 4 or 5 nights a week you might want to try brooklyn, if you can stand hipsters.
