If you can stand taking a 25 minute ferry ride every morning you might want to check out the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island. You can live very cheap and not a lot of people have caught on. Of course theres not as much culture as Brooklyn or the city, but you can walk to the ferry and be downtown in 30 minutes. Theres a few pretty cool bars in that area, and North Shore staten island is pretty nice and clean. You'll have to deal with a constant barrage of Growning up Gotti clones though.
