I joined in Boston for a year. Basically, it looks good on a resume but thats about it. I got really annoyed with how much events and other things still cost members. I felt like my membership fees only went to cover the cost of the 80 pounds of (mostly) junk mail that I received from AIGA. That said, for the most part I do think it is what you make it and it does make a difference which chapter you belong to....some are much much much more active than others. Boston I think had like 4-7 events the year I was a member and there didn't seem to be too much effort on really building a community. I will probably join again because I did receive some positive response from having it on my resume and website....to me that alone might be worth the initial $295, or whatever it is now. Its weird because anyone who knows anything about it knows that ANYONE can join.....you don't have to have a single ounce of talent, just pay the fee....so, really, it shouldn't mean much if you have it on your resume but people do, for the most part, respect it.
.....that was a bit long....rant over.
