i don't know it verbatim, but there's a bukowski quote to the effect that "you don't need love in order to be happy; just *some* form of success."
you could replace the word 'love' with 'intellectual or artistic fulfillment', 'the creation of something that will outlive you by generations', 'a huge stack of cash and all the attendant bling', 'blow jobs thrice daily', etc.
success is completely relative. the point is not what you succeed in doing, it's that you succeed full stop.
