joomla is definitly the CMS the Mambo dev's are now behind- but it is definitly NOT a competetor. the decided to rebrand Mambo after the many copyright/ previously named and similar products suits were piling up. it was a pretty dicey move as they had built a pretty good community but it is the same technology- just branded.
it is all documented on the now joomla site. HTH.
