In my opinion (and experience) refurbished machines is better than a brand new one. and here is why.
New machines always have the posibillity of an error. (that is how they turn into refurbished ones right?)
A refurfished machine, has been BETA TESTED for you by someone else, (track pad doesn't work, cosmetic damage, dead pixel, etc) so there is less chances that it will be a machine with problems.
My first PB I bought, refurbished and I had it for 2 years, and then sold it to a friend of mine and he's had it for almost 2 years now and still NO problems (other than the battery charger worn out a few months ago)
I bought a brand new powerbook from the apple store, it came with a dead pixel, and it's has already been in repair twice in less than a year.
So, I say, I rather have a beta tester for my next machine, I find it incredible that is an extra service for you and it's cheaper..
