I don't think there's much Flash stuff that's as hard to learn now as it was in, say, 2001.
The web community then was still small, info on new things was not as easy to find.
These days (and I could be wrong because I haven't touched Flash in more than a year) I imagine that much of the non-artistic aspects of Flash that were not so popular back then are pretty easy to find.
Back then, I think people went to figure out how to do what Praystation, Yugop, Presstube, etc. were doing artistically. I was at FF 2001 in NYC and that was the general vibe then.
Just depends on what you want out of it I guess.
