It depends how many colours you have in your design. I assume there is only one or two colours.
If you printed just 100% cyan then that would essentially be a spot colour but using a 4-colour process.
It's only when the 4 colour plates overlay colours that you loose brightness since it is a reductive colour process – ie the more colours you mix the closer you get to black. So as a general rule if you want bright colours, use a CMYK colour that only uses one or two plates or use spot colours.
