  Thanks for your suggestions guys.

  I like your site moth. So far in terms of portfolio site design I really can't see a better alternative than the simple 2 frames design – one for menu, one for content.

  I like the daniel eatock concept but I want a bit more control over it (ie I want to choose the font and typography, rather than having defaults etc)

  for its simplicity but it's so disctinctive and well know that I couldn't use that design.

  I guess all I need is a template for the content side on the page that I could just change the text and images on when I need to create a new page.
