I strongly recommend against buying one through a hosting company (even though I work for one).
If you ever decide you want to move away from said hosting company, you'll be forced to contact them to unlock and transfer the domain, which is much more work than just using a pure registrar in the first place.
I still buy all of my personal domains through www.godaddy.com , even though they suck for hosting and have horrible tech support (never needed it, though people who expect it tend to be pissed off).
