I think part of the "understanding" issue is that a because a person doesn't believe something will never fully understand it.
For example, a person who believes in ID will never fully understand evolution because they don't believe it. The flaws in the theory become more pronounced, so there's always going to be confusion.
or it could be a simple case of not putting for the effort to understand.
i hope you understand what i'm getting at.
