Spaceboy,
I love being a designer.
I fell in love with it my junior yeat of school and haven't looked back.
Worked at a great agency in MD for a year, but then they lost a couple big clients and lost a few key pitches. Got laid off. No hard feelings, they even threw a happy hour for me, nevertheless it sucked royally.
Found a job in RI, worked there for a year, went through 3 managers in that time. The company was a mess, though I did get to work on some great projects. They got a new Marketing director, we didn't see eye to eye on the roll design could/should play, he fired me before I could quit. He was very vague in order to avoid a lawsuit, so the above is a bit of educated conjecture because he had told me days before what great work I was doing.
Moved out to MO to be with my family, wrote a book, did a website (still in progress), + stationery & poster. Sending packages out everywhere now.
I still love what I do.
I say take a year off man, travel, find what is meaningful to you. The only reason I've stuck it out through all this is that design is meaningful to me. I consider myself lucky to have found my calling.
Go out there, see the world, and find yours.
