You got the Saxon right..the other is Overkill, not Blind Guardian...
And yeah it is way more detailed now. Back in my day circa 84-rise of grunge, you had what your regular metal, your thrash and your glam metal. That was it. Well ok, you had the hardcore/metal crossover and no one really could agree on what to call it, and early on Venom was more of a sucky band than the start of the whole doom/death etc..and there was no quibling about is "Zepplin metal?" Of course they were compared to what was around - Journey? Metal they were..now it's like they're hard rock or proto metal or whatever some dumb ass indie rock crritic wants to call it and all the little lemmings follow along. Zepplin big guitars, drums, solos, songs about vikings and Golem. It's fucking metal.
Now I talk to kids and it's like we're "grindcore/death metal with doom vocals and a power metal attitude, sans makeup. Check out my cool tshit from Hot Topic". Crap man, we used to trade tapes. Yeah trade tapes - you'd mail a freaking shitty cassette to the other side of the planet of crappy bands in hope to get some cool cassettes back from Germany or Japan or Sweden or wherever, and buy crappy handmade ezines. That was a scene man, not this MetalMall crap..That was when you could wear striped spandex with a bullet belt and a denim jacket and be cool. Yeah, cool. I said it.
