"I don't know how to explain [the song's success]," says Fabo. "Except to say — that song came from my heart. It came from a life of poverty and struggle."
Wait a minute. "Girl shake your Laffy Taffy/Your Laffy Taffy" is a dispatch from a life of poverty and struggle?
"I mean, it is a fun song," Mook-B adds. "We just wanted to do something catchy, that 3-year-olds to 80-year-olds could sing along to and not be offended."
Not be offended? Hmm. Mook-B must know some naughty 3-year-olds and 80-year-olds. Despite pornographic references elsewhere in the song, the men of D4L insist that "laffy taffy" isn't crude-yet-radio-friendly slang, a la Foxy Brown's "Ill Na Na" or Ludacris' "Phat Rabbit."
"It's just caaaanndy," Fabo says with mock sincerity. Then, still grinning, he affects a schoolmarm voice: "All of you who think otherwise have dirty minds."
