these "best" whatever threads always strike me as odd. art is so subjective to begin with...
i mean, best based on what? fucking billboard magazines defintion of "alterrnative"?
kind of ironic that "alternative" and "independent" now refer to fairly specfic musical styles... when initially it was just the opposite.
that said, jane's addiction may the the "essential" altrenative band...
by getting "been caught stealing" played on mtv, they primed the pop pump for nirvana and others...
...setting up the rise of kiddy punk, hot topic, emo, and other standards of now mainstream american "mallternative" culture.
