Did he appreciate that she was on Holiday Holiday, or just, you know - on holiday?
There's a big difference - one to feel a bit of a dick about, the other to joke about over warm cider and tales of the old country in a small tavern near Bristol.
When I say 'feel a bit of a dick', I mean that he should be conscious that he was being thoughtless and should have expended more consideration about her position - Not that he should snake his hands through an unassuming copy-boy's fly and give it a bit if a tweak (know'ot I mean?)
That would likely make the situation untenable.
