the page file is basically your 'virtual memory'. the size of the page file is usually default at 1.5 times (size) the amount of ram you have. it simply extends the amount of memory you have.
the cool thing about the page file is it can be edited to fit your needs.
the page file is very important to the preformance of you xp box.
you can change the size of the page file (since it is a 'file' on the harddrive and not physical memory (ram)) to allow for better performance.
