Goatlamb, I was in the exact same position as you. Have a pb 550 and the hinge broke. I didn't want to invest 3k on a G5 desktop when the new chips are coming out in a couple of years but also had to have more power than my 550.
I bought a 20" Imac and put in 1.5 gigs of ram (250gb hard drive) and I am in heaven. And the whole thing, ram and all, cost me about $1300. I highly recommend it.
