Well after talking with a couple of colleagues, everyone seems to be in agreement that it's a custom serif font. It's probably close related to Lucida, or Baskerville like font. Rober Indiana probably just customzed it (as an artist would do). It is a piece of pop-art I believe so I'm assuming that it isn't just a font on a pedastal. Hope this sheds some light!
