i'd say figure in your expenses - and request that your needs be met. that salary is extremely tight for the NY cost of living.
i'm in the midwest where cost of living is really low. and 30-35 is pretty much what people start at out of school.
its a reasonable request to ask for cost of living. and if you're a diligent worker and low cost - you're extremely valuable to them.
