perhaps this is a better example as it is further from the horrors of rape yet displays the same meaning...
I lived in Zürich's red light district for a year, my aunt was terrified that I would get stabbed or shot or mugged or whatever.
If she had ever came to visit me I have no doubts whatsoever that she would have been attacked within seconds, due to her making herself a victim.
Me on the otherhand, well I never wore a nice watch with short sleeves for example... it's a survival technique ultimately. I let my own mother walk to my flat from the train station and had no fear of her being attacked, she knew not to attract attention to herself.
Was it a shame that I can't wear my favourite watch? Yes of course it was.
Would I wear it anyway out of "well I should be able to"?
Hell no I wanted to still have it tomorrow.
