Get your portfolio into shape and contact all the design agencies directly and ask if they're hiring freelances and that you'd like to meet with them to show your portfolio.
Most positions in Syd go through word of mouth - less advertising and recruiters.
Lots of agencies will be happy to at least meet with you - and eventually one will bite.
