....plus, when I export as a PDF, it exports not just what is inside the "artboard", but the mask I am using that falls outside the artboard...which I don't want to happen.

(if you have nothing selected it crops to page size, for PDFs, jpeg exports etc etc.)
don't know how long this feature has been there.
