Actually, on a Mac...
Command+click -- will open a link in a new tab. This works for both Firefox and Safari.
Now if you want to take it one step further, you can program the click of your scroll wheel to be modified to a "command+click" action. I have used this for a long time and works like a charm. Just click on the link with your sroll wheel. Granted, you will need a mouse with a scroll wheel.
