ruts can sometimes come from being comfortable in a certain layout and not realizing that you need to break out of the rut.
maybe the fact that you realize that there is a rut there you are in less danger of being trapped in it.
but to answer your question...i dont know. personally i try every alternative i can think of when im starting a new layout, and only go with something similar to something i have done in the past when i come to the conclusion that it is either more efficient or just works better.
