It's a prime-time soap opera, so of course the writing isn't as clever as the critics claim it is; the actors are horribly bad (Mischa Barton is terribly overrated; same with Rachel Bilson and dude who plays Ryan), and no one is ever going to be happy for too long. That's entertainment television for 'ya.
