Canceling on people is bullshit. You just don't go there. If you say you're going to do something, do it. If not, don't go feeding people lies until the day before. Be a responsible, good person and do the right thing. If you're not sure you can follow through, say "maybe" or "no"... but don't let somebody go making plans around you for weeks and then bail. It's wrong any way you slice it.
Don't talk to me, flakey friends. You are invisible to me.
This is why I miss the mid-west and hate LA. The kids back home in Detroit and Cleveland will stand by you even if the building you're in is burning down.
