ok, i managed to replicate the problem with MSIE. according to the flash player site u need to either restart the browser or your system.
i restarted the system and then it worked fine.
i take it you have downloaded flex to get the 8.5 player?
ive not yet tested it with 8.5 - but technically, it shoudl work.
