Depends on the male, depends on the movie.
Jock-types who walk around quoting Caddyshack all day do so as a break from thinking about the three B's: Beer, baseball, and boobs.
The rest of us odd but adorable hipster types do so as a gesture of intellect wrapped in a harmless grapeleaf of pop culture sensibility. It is a way of reaching out and making a connection with others who may share the same interests. Plus, being able to take a Big Liebowski line and segue to a Godard line (in French no less) is pretty neat.
It may be lame, but it comes from a good place.
